I am an extremely social person and I love to spend time with my friends and boyfriend as much as possible. This is a great thing, don’t get me wrong. However, if I’m not careful, it can lead to me feeling burnt out. I work from home and spend time alone during the day, but this isn’t the “Me” time that I find myself truly needing.
We all need to take time for ourselves and hit the reset button if you will. Taking this alone time clears my head and leaves me feeling refreshed and more productive overall! This year I want to focus on consciously carving out more time to spend with myself. As corny as this may sound, nurturing the friendship that you have with yourself is the most important relationship to nurture of all. This past year has taught me this important lesson and I want to place more of my focus on it moving forward.
With that being said, I wanted to share with you fifteen of my favorite ways to spend a little more “Me” time with myself:
ONE // Take a Bubble Bath
Honestly, nothing sounds more relaxing to me than drawing a hot bath, lighting a few candles, pouring a glass of wine, and listening to an audio book. Pure bliss. I normally am not an audio book fan, but I love not having to worry about ruining a physical book when I am in the tub. This way I can just close my eyes and completely relax while I listen to the story!
TWO // Head to the Book Store
I am a huge reader, so I love to go to the book store and flip through coffee table books and novels. I usually find one or two that I like and read them in the store for a few hours cozied up with a Starbucks. I order all of my books on Amazon.com because they are significantly less expensive, so I do feel slightly bad reading books that I’m not going to purchase. But oh well… I keep them in mint condition so what’s the harm?
THREE // Take a Class
A few months ago I recently joined Class Pass and I love trying different work out classes! For a monthly fee, Class Pass let’s you take up to three classes a month at one place, but the number of places that you try is unlimited. For more info head over to Class Pass. This is SUCH a fun way to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. They offer everything from yoga to pole dancing and I love exploring the different types of classes. This is fun to do with a friend, but I enjoy forging the way and trying the different ones by myself first!
FOUR // Visit the Park
Pack a snack and a book or your laptop and head to the park! I love reading outside on sunny days! I like to do this sometimes when I am working as well. Working outside in the sunshine and fresh air seems to make the work day so much more pleasant!
FIVE // Try a New Recipe
Cooking really isn’t my thing, but I do enjoy picking out an entree and side dish to make and giving it a whirl from time to time. I like to turn it into a “date night” and light a candle, pour some wine, and set the table for myself. I mean – hey… why not?!
SIX // Stretch By Candle Light
This is my favorite way to fit in a quick “Me Time” session before bed. I like to light a candle or two and lay down on my floor and stretch. Stretching completely relaxes me before bed, and I find that I sleep much heavier when I take the time to do it.
SEVEN // Take Yourself to Lunch
Although I don’t like to cook, I am a huge foodie! I LOVE trying new restaurants and dishes. Every once and awhile (when I can afford it) I like to take myself out to a nice lunch. I pull out all of the stops: appetizer, entree, wine, dessert, etc. I take a leisurely lunch and just relax. This a great way to pamper yourself and take a minute to simply relax and indulge!
EIGHT // Experiment With a New Up-Do or Makeup Look
I am bad about taking the time to update my look occasionally. I have my hair and makeup routine that I stick to and don’t tend to vary much. Because of this, I sometimes find it fun to just play around a little and try out the updo that I have been eyeing on Pinterest. This is a fun way to add a new hair or makeup look into your arsenal and spend a little alone time in the process!
NINE // Explore a New Part of Town
This is great if you live in a big city like me. I have lived in Dallas for over fifteen years but I am constantly finding new areas to explore. Find a new part of your city that you haven’t explored and make an afternoon of it! Grab some lunch, do a little window shopping; whatever strikes your fancy! Take note of all of the neat places that you find so that you can bring your friends back to show them!
TEN // DIY Something
Ya’ll we live in the age of Pinterest (thank goodness). Find something that you have been dying to make and get to it! Crank up some music and craft until your little heart is content.
ELEVEN // Go Window Shopping
This is fun to do when you have no money to actually shop (like me right now). I like to head to the mall and “window shop” for things to add to my wish list! I typically grab a drink, have some lunch, and hit the stores. I really enjoy doing this when I need a little alone time and some retail therapy.
TWELVE // Start a New Series
Netflix “and chill” with yourself. Heh heh. See what I did there? Curl up and start a new series to binge watch. Nothing is better than being piled under layers of blankets remote in hand, ready to start a new adventure! Make a
week day out of it. Stock up on snacks and wine and maybe actual food (so you don’t have to leave your apartment until you actually want to) and hop into bed!
THIRTEEN // Clean Your Apartment
While this might not sound like the funnest option on this list, it honestly can be if you make it fun. Everyone has to clean their home at some point, so why not make it a blast? I crank the music, grab the
guitar Swiffer mop and get to cleaning. I pretty much get down with my bad self until the apartment is clean and I am tired of dancing.
FOURTEEN // Take a Drive
I love driving and listening to music. This truly is my happy time and I try to do it as often as I can. Thank goodness my car gets good gas mileage. I love to make a new playlist, grab a few snacks, and take a long drive. You could even make this into a mini road trip and go explore a new part of the city or neighboring city (see # 9). I feel like a common theme throughout this list is snacks… I mean, when are snacks not needed? Exactly.
FIFTEEN // Go to the Movies Alone
Seeing a movie by myself is one of my favorite things to do! I may or may not sneak wine into the movie theater (judge me I dare you) along with a few snacks. One time I saw a movie so late that I was the only one in the theater. This was slightly creepy at first but I quickly warmed up to it. It was like watching a movie at home but on a giant screen! So fun!
I hope that you enjoyed some of my favorite ways to spend “Me” time. I have a blast doing these and I am fairly confident that you will too. Let me know YOUR favorite way to spend alone time down in the comments! I would love to hear from you.
