Design Breakdown: Colorful Sitting Room

I haven’t done a Design Breakdown in quite some time! For those of you that don’t know what a Design Breakdown is here on Progression By Design, it is when I select a room that I love and break down the various design components that make it so stunning. Read along as I share my interior design tips, tricks, and observations with you!

When browsing my Living Rooms board on Pinterest to select an image for today, I came across this stunning sitting room by Cassie from Hi Sugarplum! and Kristin from the Hunted Interior. I have followed both of their blogs for quite some time and have loved seeing their growth. These talented ladies absolutely killed it with this bold sitting room in Cassie’s new home. Thus I bring to you today’s gorgeous Design Breakdown! Head to the bottom of the post for shopping links to similar items so that you can recreate this look in your own home!

Anchor the Back Wall With a Built In

This custom built in not only adds an enormous amount of storage to the space, but creates a focal point for the sitting room and anchors the back wall. I love that they chose to paint the built in a gorgeous shade of navy blue lacquer to make it stand out even more. They kept the top and outer shelves emptier to draw the focus onto the abstract art piece in the center of the built in.

Use Symmetry to Calm the Space

I love that they used such bold patterns and colors in this sitting room. Without the proper use of symmetry, this space would have felt chaotic and stressful due to the number of patterns used. The main conversation area is centered on the back wall and anchored with matching end tables and lamps to create visual balance.

Mixing the Old With the New

My favorite part about this space besides that stunning rug, is the unique combination of an antique secretary desk with modern prints and pieces like leopard and lucite. By mixing the old with the new, they added a unique, curated feel to the room.

Find a Jumping Off Point

As you can see, this sitting room is bursting with color and pattern. I love that this space seems to perfectly reflect Cassie’s bubbly, sweet personality. Cassie loves color and isn’t afraid to show it! It seems to me that they used the stunning purple rug as a jumping off point and let it dictate the color palette for the rest of the space. I enjoy doing this with rooms that I am designing because it can facilitate such unexpected combinations. Without this rug, I never would have thought to pair a bold purple and a bright yellow together!

Pattern Mixing

Pattern mixing can seem tricky, but it doesn’t have to be! A good rule of thumb to follow when mixing patterns is to select a larger scale pattern such as the purple checkered pillow above, and mix it with a smaller scale print, like the navy leopard print pillow. Pattern mixing is all about experimentation. Don’t be afraid to try an unlikely combination together! Some of my favorite combos have been made this way. If it works, it works!
