At every change of the season I find myself standing in front of my closet feeling like I have nothing to wear. Okay, let’s be real, I do that basically every day… But especially when we are on the cusp of a new season. I like to use the changing weather as a benchmark to asses the gaps that I have in my wardrobe.
I notoriously get distracted with bold prints and statement pieces and end up kicking myself when I don’t have enough basic staples to work with. This spring I want to determine what pieces are missing from my wardrobe (in my case basic staples) and fill in the gaps as needed. Having a strong wardrobe foundation allows me to get creative when styling outfits and gives me plenty to work with. Every season I try to stick with this shopping strategy:
- Make a list of the pieces that you want
- Asses what you already own
- Fill in the remaining gaps with new pieces
I have compiled a list of the basic wardrobe essentials that I am on the hunt for this spring season for your viewing pleasure! I find that it is really helpful to keep a list in mind when I am shopping so that I don’t end up with twenty things that I don’t really need. Feel free to save this image to your phone to keep on hand next time that you are out shopping!
SHOES | Block Heels, Sam Edelman | Wedges, Tory Burch | Sandals, Jack Rogers |TOPS | Halter Top, Kendall and Kylie (so in love) | Bell Sleeved Blouse, Revolve | Roll Tab Blouse, Lush (33% off right now)| DRESSES | Black Lace Fit and Flare, Nordstrom | Striped Romper, MLM | Swing Dress, Old Navy | BOTTOMS | White Toothpick Jeans, J Crew | Tie Front Slacks, J Crew (THAT BOW!) | Wide Leg Jeans, Frame Denim | ACCESSORIES | Statement Earrings, Bauble Bar | Sun Hat, Nordstrom | Crossbody, Kate Spade |
I love the new block heel trend this spring and have been embracing it wholeheartedly. Block heels are like the Ugg boot of heels because they are SO comfortable to walk in. I love fun statement heels as much as the next girl, but I find myself reaching for neutral colors so much more often for day to day use. I love this suede pair from Sam Edelman. The crisscross detailing and lace up ankle accent add such a fun element to these basic block heels!
In addition to a good pair of everyday heels, I like to have a pair of simple wedges and a pair of casual grab-and-go sandals like my Jack Rogers. In fact I try to purchase several pairs of casual sandals every year because I find that when I only have one pair, they get ruined so much faster because I am wearing them so much.
Shirts and Blouses
If you’re going to buy one shirt this spring, buy this simple roll tab blouse (and it’s on sale!). The options are literally endless with this wardrobe essential and I highly recommend purchasing at least one. Shirts are where I start to veer off course when I am shopping. There are so many stunning tops with bold patterns and colors that I adore! But honestly how many times can I really wear a bright fuchsia shirt without people noticing? I find that I am so much happier with my wardrobe when I have a good selection of basic tops to accessorize with bold accessories.
Dresses and Rompers
Having a collection of simple but stylish dresses in your wardrobe arsenal is a must. They take so much less time to style than a full ensemble and you don’t have to wear pants. That’s a win win if I ever saw one. And wait, it gets better! Rompers are like dresses, except you don’t have to do everything with your legs clamped shut. Run, frolic, dance on a table at brunch; rompers give you that choice. I have really been loving the look of the off the shoulder romper trend, and this striped one is SO perfect I can’t even stand it.
Pants and Jeans
White pants make for some of my favorite spring outfits and are a complete wardrobe essential. I feel like you can throw anything over white jeans and it just looks good. I love the white toothpick jeans from J crew, but there are so many other options out there to try!
With all of the seventies inspired fashion that we have been seeing as of late, I have noticed a rise in the popularity of wide leg and flare jeans yet again. No jean is the same, but I feel that this rings especially true when it comes to wide leg jeans. If the beginning of the flare isn’t placed properly, it can make your legs appear much larger than they really are. Find a pair that subtly begins to taper down below the knee. When executed properly, wide leg jeans can be SO flattering.
While I have been advocating stocking up on your wardrobe basics, fun accessories and statement pieces are just as crucial to a well rounded wardrobe. Dress up the simple tops and dresses that you have picked out with statement jewelry or a fun hat!
